A simulated rugby field at Loftus Versfeld was filled to capacity with bags of clothing and bedding collected by Clothing4Children from Pretoria Schools. Vodacom Blue Bulls, DHL Western Province and Sharks players in the under 19, under 21 and senior teams, fans, sponsors and suite owners in the Pretoria region also collected for the Clothing4Children Campaign. Prior to Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup clash between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and DHL Western Province, all the players walked on to the field with their bags to show their support for the inspiring campaign, started by Burger brothers Schalk and Wim.

In the week building up to the final day for donations, The Blue Bulls Company and Clothing4Children had received more than 53 000 bags of clothing and bedding from schools, while fans and players brought their bags to Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, taking the total tally to almost 55 000 bags which are estimated to be worth more than R200 Million.

The Blue Bulls Company has applauded the generosity of local schools for showing just how willing they are to donate to a worthy cause. Clothing4Children, a non-profit organisation formed by teenage brothers Schalk and Wim Burger in 2010, pledged to clothe 13.5 million desperately needy people in South Africa of which 1.2 Million needy people reside in the Pretoria Metropole. Their goal is to raise 50 000 bags of clothing with the Blue Bulls-Loftus event.

Powerful images of homeless, poverty-stricken South Africans evoked the sense of charity and generosity amongst various schools in Pretoria and its surrounding areas so much so, that 38 500 bags have already been collected to date from 24 schools. The bags of clothing and bedding already collected by C4C to date are worth an estimated R205.8 million and would more than comfortably fill a 100m x 50m rugby field.

Richard Papo, Vodacom Blue Bulls Marketing Manager, said the desire amongst schools to make a difference by providing basic necessities for the unemployed, homeless and poor was overwhelming.

“The Clothing4Children initiative serves as a constant reminder that there are millions of underprivileged people in desperate need of our help. While conjuring up images of pain and sadness, there are many heart-warming stories as a result of the inspirational work started by the Burger brothers. Without question, we struck an emotional chord and have been astounded by the immense response of our local schools.

The Blue Bulls Company and Clothing4Children are immensely grateful and are confident we’ll surpass our joint Loftus goal of 50 000 bags of clothing based on the response and support we’ve already received.”

The focus then turns to rugby clubs, suite owners, sponsors and general fans who will deliver their bags of clothing and bedding on Saturday, September 17th at Loftus Versfeld when the Vodacom Blue Bulls host Western Province in an Absa Currie Cup match.

Players from the Under 19 and Under 21 teams as well as senior players from both teams will walk onto the field carrying their bags of clothing.

There are a dedicated area 100 X 50 m in size behind the Northern pavillion already stacked with approximately 39 000 bags of clothing and we want to encourage more fans to participate and bring their bags to Loftus on or before Saturday’s game.

40 000 bags. 10 000 to go!

Saturday’s match programme will include information, pictures and details about the Clothing4Children initiative and participating schools will be also be included. Three minutes during the halftime interval has been allocated to Clothing4Children to address the fans.

LED screens at Loftus Versfeld will feature one-minute videos of schools’ collections and Vodacom Blue Bulls players’ endorsements, Clothing4Children advertisements and the names of participating schools. Additional bags will be distributed via the ticket office at Loftus Versfeld from Monday, September 12th.

It is this desperate need which birthed a partnership between the Blue Bulls and clothing4children - with the aim of collecting as many as 50 000 bags of clothing by the 17th of September 2011.

The clothing will be distributed in disadvantaged communities across the metropole by turn the tide 4 children, local church networks and other organisations, including Walk Thru the Bible’s High Impact Network.

Clothing4children and the Blue Bulls are working together to collect these clothes from as many local schools as possible in the Pretoria/ Tshwane area. With over 40 schools expected to participate in this venture, this is indeed a drive that will make a difference to many in this area who live in dire need.

The clothing4children initiative was launched by brothers Schalk and Wim Burger, who saw the potential for meeting great need, through encouraging their fellow school mates to collect surplus and unused clothing, shoes and bedding to

The partnership between the Blue Bulls Company and clothing4children was officially announced by Martin Deacon, CEO

What a joy to see the support of both the Blue Bulls and Sharks players – who certainly made an impact as they walked onto the field carrying their filled clothing4children bags.

Rev. Vincent Kandan from the Lenasia Church of the Nazarene ran the r12 Campaign in March, below is an encouraging letter telling about the impact r12 had on his life, his family, his church and community -

We entered the 50th (Jubilee Year) of our church building being in existence, this year. The church building was completed and occupied on the 25th of September 1961. This was the first religious building built in Lenasia. Today Lenasia has a population of over 68000 people and is surrounded by many informal settlements.

I prayed much that God would give me something to take to the congregation that would encourage, grow and move them to another level in their relationship with Him. Praise the Lord for Walk Thru the Bible (Elvis Mvulane) who invited us to attend a workshop where r12 was being promoted and I immediately knew that this is what our church needed and got started on planning a year-long celebration with r12!

I encouraged leadership and the congregation to buy into the r12 concept and training commenced. Cell group leaders, Sunday school teachers and our Youth team were tasked to run with the r12 program in their departments.

We ran two services on Sunday mornings at 8:30am and 10:30am where I preached on the r12 topics. The topic preached on Sunday was followed up by the Cell Groups, Youth, Men’s Fellowship/Women’s Fellowship and Sunday Schools.

Out of this exercise 25 Cell groups were established and each group had an average attendance of +- 12 people. At the end of the sixth week the people felt that the r12 should be done again as it was not fully understood. The number of Cells had to be reduced and this time many of them started with the last topic which was ‘Supernaturally responding to evil with good’.

Our Youth Cell met on Friday evenings and r12 was introduced to them at their level. The average attendance of our youth was +- 80. The young people were blessed and grew in their spiritual relationship with the Lord. They ended with a great Youth Day celebration!

We are so blessed to have professional educators amongst our Sunday School Teachers and they have assisted in writing up a curriculum using r12 to teach to our Sunday School children at their level. (This curriculum version has been adopted by Walk Thru the Bible). Our Sunday Schools consist of +- 90 children.

Our church has successfully been running Holiday Bible Clubs in Lenasia for many years. This year from the 4th to the 8th of July 2011 in conjunction with our 50th Celebration and r12 we reached +- 800 children from the Thembelishle informal settlement and the surrounding areas of Lenasia. The same r12 syllabus which was used for the Sunday Schools was used for the Holiday Bible Club. Our emotions could not be controlled when children from all walks of life made a commitment and surrendered to God! We were blessed with a birthday cake the size of a trestle (table) which was donated by Fruit & Veg Lenasia and enjoyed tremendously by everyone on the last day!

We have just completed a wonderful and successful r12 campaign here at the Lenasia Church of the Nazarene! The campaign started on the 6th of March and ended on the 17th of April where we concluded with a wonderful service where Rev. Elvis Mvulane was the special guest speaker!

r12 has made a great impact in many lives and has been a life changing experience for many members of our congregation. I am so encouraged to see how people are applying r12 to almost every challenge which they are faced with. By the renewing of their minds families were brought together again. Many people stood dead in their tracks when it came to forgiveness.. but thanks to the r12 program they are now working towards forgiveness and how to repay good for evil!

We have just run a successful Marriage Enrichment Breakfast Session on 13 August with 22 couples in attendance. The topic ‘Making a Sober Assessment of Your Marriage’ was used. What a wonderful experience with Pastor Elvis Mvulane as one of our speakers!

We thank God for an organization as Walk Thru and look forward to working closely with them. Thank you for your commitment and hard work!

I can’t believe it! …….. we are coming to the close of 2011 and still running with the r12 program!, ……… can you believe it!

God bless you always!

500 since they started with the r12 Campaign.

The church members were very excited and challenged and have seen changes in their families lives,
as well as in the direct community. They are currently running 32 small groups and because of the
r12, this number is gradually growing. It has also positively affected the community and school
projects run by the church, such as the vegetable garden. They have also employed 6 staff to work at
the school and have distributed bags of clothing received from clothing4children.

This is what they had to say:

“It was good to be reminded of things I have known for a while, but I realized I can apply these principles to my own kids on a day-to-day basis. The training equips teachers to work with kids and there will be a much better chance that children will come to love the Lord and His Word.”

“I was once again reminded that as a body each of us have a different gift and function. We need to make room for the differences in the students in our class.”

“I loved the practical activities and ideas. Just the fact that I got to experience the lessons, I can now better teach the children that I work with. This training reminded me how much I love working with children and teaching them about God and how important it is to build relationships with them.”

“I have realized that the more I take part in this training I get to know what God wants me to do – to better my ministry for His glory. I was also reminded by one of the students that my own children are a ministry!”

“Children’s ministry is fun! Through KidZ At Heart I can bring the Bible to life for the children.”

“I have learned a lot and I will be able to use it in my ministry. It also helps financially because I have seen that you don’t need expensive equipment to teach lessons from the Word!”

“The training has transformed the way I think about children’s ministry. I have been involved in youth ministry for a long time and one tends to do things in the same way over and over again. KidZ At Heart is a fresh way of thinking about how to minister to kids.

“The multiple intelligences were an eye opener to me. We can teach in different ways and reach all the kids in our class.”

“It was a treat to be a part of the plays, games, stories and fun!”

“I saw volunteers getting excited to share Jesus with children. I heard comments like ‘this material can change the world’. I felt the Holy Spirit inspire all of us. I tasted a piece of heaven through the people that did the training. All the glory to Him!”

- Joan Hanekom, KidZ At Heart Trainer, SA

“I felt like a child myself while experiencing the lessons.”

“I think the highlight of the training for me was when one of the students interrupted us during our Prodigal Son lesson to share his testimony. He told us that many years ago through this story he came to know Christ. He said he was the prodigal son that was welcomed back with open arms by his Father.”

The first ‘convoy’ made up of 3 vehicles and 2 trailers departed from their offices in the afternoon to deliver a large load of clothing, bedding, food, etc. to four areas in Limpopo – Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, Makapanstad and Lefatlheng. This will be distributed by the mission team to orphans, child-run households, elderly and the poor.

Special thanks can be given to several donors, amongst others, Hospice Centurion and Walk Thru the Bible, who made this gift possible. Individuals such as Gustaf Klingbiel, Vincent du Plessis and Willem Kelber who made their vehicles and/or trailers available, as well as Gustaf, Vincent and Dawie who gave up their time to do the delivery.

On the Saturday everyone was very excited by the instant rapport they had with the congregation and children. The children were hanging onto them ‘like apples on trees’, playing, dancing around and doing everything the team had them do. The team presented an outstanding silent drama about receiving and giving out the love of Jesus, ending with an eruption of applause by the children.

On Sunday, the team divided in 3 groups and were taken to 3 different churches where 3 of the team members were going to bring a Gospel message, as well as minister at a large youth gathering during the afternoon. The congregation testified that Jonathan Lee, the team leader had delivered an excellent, encouraging message.

Cotlands received 542 bags of clothing from Clothing 4 Children on the 27th May 2011.

The month of May is special on their calendar as they celebrate Hospice Week at the start of the month, and end off observing Child Protection Week.

Cotlands have two residential care programmes in Gauteng and Western Cape that offer places of safety for abandoned, abused, orphaned and terminally ill children. Their Hospices and Sanctuaries currently provide shelter to more than 120 children. In these units, they provide palliative care, baby stimulation, health, nutrition, education and psychosocial services – they believe that it is this holistic approach that benefit the children in the long-term. Although initially regarded as separate units, the successful introduction of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and the associated improved health and longevity of the children, has resulted in the little ones moving through both units, depending on their needs, at any given time.

“ From every child in our care, our volunteers, staff, managers and board, we thank you for your incredibly generous donation and extremely hard work. We know that this took a lot of planning and preparation and we want to thank everyone involved. We are incredibly grateful. Your contribution is the reason we are able to continue our services to the children in our programmes across South Africa. Every child has the right to safety, health and education – and because of your contribution to our cause, we are able to continue the work that we do. Thank you!” Kenton Born (Relationship Manager, Cotlands)
