A new wave of volunteerism is about to break forth from the youth for the youth.

Schalk Burger a young man of 17 recently met with turn the tide 4 children (ttt4c.org) to discuss community service, a value he and his school shared and are expected to participate in. As we prayed and brainstormed with Schalk about how children can become change agents in our nation a new dream was birthed and he accepted the call to launch a new youth movement called clothing4children.

Project THANX!

Project THANX!

The goal is to first envision the youth of South Africa and beyond to reach out with clothing and shoes to those who are less fortunate.

The vision is to then see one million children clothed over the next 5 years from the abundance and excess of those who have much and want to share with those who do not have.

Project THANX! is the first pilot project that will be launched on Friday, October 29th, 2010 with the blessing and enthusiasm of Mr. Cameron, the principal of St. John’s College in Johannesburg. Schalk and his fellow classmates were earlier motivated by a similar call from the principal who called on their students to be thankful. The school’s chaplaincy expressed enthusiasm for a project that help the children “do God’s will”.

As newly elected headboy of St. John’s College (Student Body President) Schalk will call on his fellow students to take on the challenge to pray, dream and do beyond the norm. This call to all fellow students and teachers reflects Schalk’s personal faith response of gratitude towards God for the blessings he and others enjoy.

As he engaged with ttt4c it became clear that community service can go beyond the romantic and that the children of private and other privileged schools have it within their hearts and capacity to make a national difference.

Schalk will share the vision with his fellow pupils – to go back home over the weekend and harvest clothing that does not fit anymore and yet still in good quality. These clothes are to be packed it in five bags (disposal size) and two shoe boxes. Students will bring it to school on Monday and everything will be weighed, piled and sorted per pupil so that the individual, class, house and school weight be measured.

Competitions, service opportunities, media/web initiatives, and delivery strategies will be launched to motivate and market the program to five other schools before 2010 and then to 100 in early 2011. Plans are in the making to ask international music artist, sports and film celebrities to endorse and participate.

The recipients of these clothes will initially be the ttt4c soccer camp players from townships, who will in turn bless hundreds of others as they deliver more clothing to many others in the build up to this Christmas.

Thereafter the recipients of the clothing will be children nominated from their communities by ttt4c partners – particularly community churches with credible children programs.

We encourage all to join this venture of faith that can bless the children of Africa! Watch this space for updates

After watching your interview on Morning Live this morning, I was left with a lump on my throat about the good work you guys are doing. Is there any way I can get involved in assisting this good cause. I am not working and would like to volunteer in whatever way I can assist. Do not hesitate to contact me. I live in Kensington along Kitchener Ave in Johannesburg.
