Community description:
The urban suburb of Windsor East accommodates a lot of low-income families in flats or houses. Surrounding suburbs are higher-income families and residential area. The accommodation in the area appears to be good, and there are several schools and shops nearby.
Many families are underprivileged and can only find work as domestic workers or gardeners, or running a small business (with average monthly income of only R1,500 – R2,000). Because of this low income, many families share rented accommodation, which means that 4 or 5 families might be sharing a 2-bedroomed flat. The parents work long hours which means that children find themselves on the streets after school. Many children are unsupervised in the afternoons and consequently fall prey to drug pushers, gangs and petty crime in the area.
The project operates in the Recreation Centre premises and it appears that Councillor van Zyl (of Ward 98) is active in promoting community cohesion.
