Breaking Barriers

Language no barrier with Walk Thru the Old Testament
Walk Thru the Old Testament is one of the Learning Adventures available from Walk Thru the Bible – and what an adventure and joy it was to present this seminar in a rural area of Venda – in the hills beyond Thohoyandou – on a warm summer’s day in November 2011.

The temperature in the shade was in the high 30s – but the 46 adults and 7 children were undeterred as they gathered to Walk Thru the Old Testament. They included representatives from 6 denominations and 9 local churches in the area.
As some of the people who attended the seminar were only able to speak Venda, the seminar was translated by two men during the course of the day. The day got off to a great start. The group were surprised and enthusiastic to be able to learn the main people, places and events of the Old Testament in their mother tongue and using the hand signs. (I was grateful to have made a head start in learning some of the keywords of the Old Testament in Venda before making the trip from Johannesburg – with the help of a Venda Bible and a Bible College student!)

The late afternoon brought a gentle breeze which cooled the venue slightly and we were able to complete the Walk Thru the Old Testament with the final review of the day. The group put together the big picture of the Old Testament – using the key words and hand signs – in just 3 minutes and 46 seconds. What an excellent time, given that they were reviewing 4,000 years of Bible history!

The church leadership in the area have requested that we return again – to train more church leaders in the Walk Thru the Old Testament and then later for a Walk Thru the New Testament Seminar.
Language is indeed no barrier to people enjoying God’s Word with Walk Thru the Old Testament.
